SAT POLICY

Saint James College does not require SAT test result submission as a criterion for student enrollment.

Saint James College is in the vanguard of American colleges that are foregoing the previous practice of enrolling only prospective students presenting with the highest SAT scores.

Maine’s Bates College conducted a 20-year experiment which has demonstrated very little statistical difference in academic performance and graduation rates among students who submitted SAT scores and those who did not.

Since adopting a SAT-optional policy in 2004, we here at Saint James College have found that students who did not submit score results from the standardized test have performed according to our high academic standards.

Applicants who have completed the SAT or ACT may present them to our Admissions Department, if they wish.  These scores will be used as just one tool in determining the students’ level of preparedness for college-level studies.  We do not use these test results as a predictor of a student’s likelihood of graduation since SAT and non-SAT students have been shown to perform equally well.

Besides Saint James College, schools other than ours that are no longer requiring submission of SAT results include Drew University in Madison, N.J.;  College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass.;  Knox College in Galesburg, Ill.;  St. Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y.;  Chatham College in Pittsburgh;  Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin; Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Fla.; and Bennington College in Vermont.

It is estimated that some 730 U.S. colleges don't require SAT or ACT scores, however included on the list are many technical schools, religious schools, or colleges with open admissions policies.

The SAT is a product of the not-for-profit testing agency, The College Board.
